1/72 Trumpeter F-105D 344th TFS, 4th TFW Takhli

Here is the Trumpeter 1/72 F-105D. I was inspired by 'Rolling Thunder' the memoirs of Ed Rasimus who flew 100 missions North in one of these aircraft. The F-105D was originally designed for the European battle field where it had the rather distasteful role of tossing tactical nuclear bombs at the Warsaw Pact hordes.  Very strong and fast at low level.  Like many jets its undoing could be a hit on its hydraulic system which powered its control surfaces.  Almost half the production run was lost on operations over N. Vietnam.  Its high loss rate was no worse than Phantoms on the same missions.  But it still took brave men to fly them into the teeth of the AAA, missiles and Migs up North

This kit  has the Eduard PE set and Eduard boarding ladder. I re-configured the weapons to a typical Vietnam load. I used lenses from Little Cars.com for the landing lights. Painted in SEAC Gunze paints. Post shaded with various dilute washes with Tamiya black and red brown.

I filled most of the Trumpeter 'rivet holes' on the tail where they are more prominant than you want.

Final touch was some oil leaks.  In this case a blob of enamel black/brown mix was then streaked in the direction of air flow using a clean brush dipped in enamel thinners.
