My girlfriend
recently started building scale models. I believe my enthusiasm for this hobby
has rubbed off on her, and so far it has resulted in this Junkers Ju-87R-2.
The
kit is the Revell Germany release of the very nice Hasegawa Junkers Ju-87B-2.
Anne wasn't sure that the snake motif on the kit decals is correct so she
found another Ju-87 that could fit into her growing interest for Luftwaffe
aircraft in North Africa in the early 1940s. However, the Ju-87 on the
Eagle Strike sheet she bought featured the R-2 version and not the B-2 as found
in the kit. Anne found some good references in books and on
various websites, and she soon discovered that the only changes needed were two
300-litre under-wing tanks and a tropical filter. The filter was already in the
kit, and the two tanks came from my Bf109 spare box. Anne also added some
details to the cockpit and the supports for the wings tanks from scratch.

The aircraft was
pre-shaded (she must have seen me do it!), and when it had fully dried the
standard RLM 70/71/65 scheme was applied using an airbrush. Finally a lightened
version of the Model Master RLM 79 was sprayed on top of the European scheme.
Since the sand colour was probably applied with a brush Anne decided to use
Humbrol Maskol to cover the areas that had to remain in the European scheme.
When the paint had fully dried Anne applied the decals using Johnson's Kleer as
a setting solution. Before weathering the model she applied a thin layer on
Johnson's all over the model. Weathering was done with CMK Stardust.
I must admit to
being quite proud. Not only is my girlfriend building models, she is building
very nice models! Hopefully she will have her model featured in the ARC gallery
before me.
