1/72 Fine Molds Incom Corporation T-65

X-Wing star fighter

This is the first release from the Japanese Fine Molds of their nice Star Wars kits series. In fact I stopped modelling aircrafts about 15 years ago. Being a Star Wars fan, I found this model out on the net in 1/72 scale which I prefer (reasonable size for my little house). All I must say is that this kit threw me again in the modelling madness (thanks Mr Fine Molds !).

All that I can say about this model is that the name of Fine Molds is accurate for it, everything seems perfect to me as I return in modelling, I’m very encouraged. The kit proposes 4 decal options, all from the movie (Star Wars : A New Hope, the Red/Rogues squadron). You find here Red Leader (Gavin “Dave” Dreiss), Red Two (Wedge Antilles), Red Three (Biggs Darklighter) and of course Red Five, the well-known Luke Skywalker.

I choose to represent Red Leader which has the simpler option decals, I wanted the model to look just red and grey like in the movie, the other decal options seemed too “colourful” to me. Also the pilot is the less known guy among the four here and he’s the first to be shot down above the Death Star by Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced X1 star fighter (poor guy, he looked courageous anyway…).

The kit is just built out-of-box, no need to improve anything here, the fit is perfect, everything goes together well and the wings even move after completion, it’s finely engraved with a lot of details, you have the option of open or closed landing gears / cockpit, even a ladder. The kit is painted all grey FS16440 (Gunze H315), metallic grey (Gunze H18) for the inside engines, transparent smoke grey (Gunze H95) for the canopy, decaled, highly weathered (yes, rebels don’t have time cleaning their fighters during the war) with a black juice and some airbrushed smoke grey H95. I dry brushed the corners in silver and the engines in copper. The finish is matt. I just transgressed the notice with the R5 unit which I painted red and black instead of white and red.

Hope you enjoyed my first article on ARC… Next step : the mighty TIE fighter…
