Here is
my first submission to ARC of the Hobbycraft P-40 that I built (and took
pictures of) while I was deployed to Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan as an
infantryman with the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, New York Army National
Guard, in 2008. I built the model during our down time between combat
patrols. Luckily for me, my wife sent me all of my essential modeling
tools (including my airbrush) and my dad sent me the kit in a care package.
As well, my company’s employees sent me an air compressor, so I was set to
continue working on models while overseas. (Oddly enough, I managed to
complete more models in the 1 year in Afghanistan than I normally do in 1 year
at home. Go figure.)

The kit
was built out of the box using the kit decals with the only addition being an
antenna wire made from fishing line. Although the cockpit and wheel well
detail was a little soft, overall it was a great kit with no fit problems at
all. The model was painted using Model Master Acrylics with Interior Green
for the cockpit and wheel wells, RAF Dark Earth and Dark Green on the topsides,
and I don’t recall what color I used for the undersides (I think I used
Aircraft Gray).
The
model was weathered with a dark brown oil wash and Tamiya weathering pastels for
the exhaust stains.
